Moving is an essential and unavoidable process when it comes to buying and selling a home. The average person moves about 12 times in their life. There are a variety of ways to make the next move less painful, including hiring help and purging items before the move.
When it comes to moving, some people prefer to hire a moving company. This is a great service when done correctly. Use a reputable company, or use moving.org to help you make an informed decision based on your moving needs. Be sure to make copies of all forms, especially the bill of lading you’ll get on the day of your move. The bill of lading is your receipt and contract. Also keep track of how much you owe, and the date of your belongings to arrive. Don’t wait until the last minute to schedule the move too. Your rates could be astronomical because of this. Also, select the insurance plan with the movers. They typically offer two, but the more expensive one will give you the most coverage, whereas the lesser will only insure partially.
If you choose to pack items yourself, try to sort through and purge items. Typically a great way to do this is to sort into three piles: sell, donate, and throw away. Sell if the condition is like new, typically furniture or other larger items you can’t bring with you or fit in your new place. Donate if the condition is ok, and can be used again. Typically books can fit into this category. Throw away if the item is useless or you can easily buy new ones, magazines and old towels fit this description. When packing your own boxes make sure to place heavier items in the bottom of the box. Try to keep the box at a manageable weight for you or the movers. Also, don’t forget to label your boxes with the name of where the items belong. This makes it easier for both you and the movers.
There is also the option of having a PODS container. Recently this has become popular for people moving shorter distances. The PODS Company will deliver an empty pod to your home. You can fill it up on your own time then they will pick it up and store it at their facilities, or they will drop it off at a new location for you to unload.
